Being a Singaporean student, you cannot
deny the importance of English. English is a common language that we all know.
At least for most of us. For me, English was my second language. I liked
English but I dislike the grammar and composition classes. They were just
boring and just troublesome. Throughout my education years, getting a C grade
for English was something I’m okay with. My mindset was that I just have to
pass.
As I got older and discovered my interest in being a building
service engineer, things started to change. I wanted to be a successful
engineer. Being in this field, report writing is something I definitely will
do. I had a taste of that during my polytechnic years. It was frustrating
having to re-edit my report a couple of times. My lecturer then was someone
with high expectations and he’ll reject any report that didn’t meet his
expectation. Due to those rejections, I managed to improve my report writing
skills. Now, I realized the importance of
English. I do regret neglecting my English foundation classes in primary school
but it’s never too late to get it right.

MAKE THAT DICTIONARY VOCAB LIMITLESS!!
Signing off, Nicholsonzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI really happy that you realized the importance of English! As for me, even though I have never really done well in English back in secondary school, I have always loved English classes. It's the subject that I really look forward to! And hey you're definitely right about it's never too late to get it right :)
Much love,
Nurul
Diyanah,
ReplyDeleteI am able to relate my English learning journey with yours quite closely. Similarly, i have never liked all the grammars as well as the composition writings. To be honest, i dislike every component of the English language. My grades had never been fantastic, with mostly border line passes. I only started to realize how important English is upon entering tertiary education. Without the usage of proper English, report writings can be quite a hassle as most of my time are actually spent on trying to correct my sentence structures and trying to get the words right.
I think it is never too late to start improving our English. As cliche as it may sound, mistakes are made so that we are able to learn from them. I hope you are not disheartened for neglecting your English foundation when you were young. Never give up and lets help each other in improving our English language.
Best regards
M Fadhli
Thank you, Diyanah, for this clear, concise and honest reflection. I can appreciate your initial apathy about English study. Maturity is a wonderful thing though, and like many others, you've realized the value of having English skills in your tool set. It warms my heart to know that some teachers played a part in inspiring your development.
ReplyDeleteSince your learning journey is continuing, please allow me to point out a few areas that could be improved:
1) For me, English was my second language. I liked English but I dislike the grammar and composition classes. They were just boring and just troublesome. Throughout my education years, getting a C grade for English was something I’m okay with. My mindset was that I just have to pass.
>>> (inconsistent verb tense usage)
2) My lecturer then was someone with high expectations and he’ll reject... >>>
(verb tense)
3) Being in this field, report writing is something I definitely will do. >>> (dangling modifier)
Is "report writing" "in this field"?
4) Now, I realized the importance of English. >>> (verb tense)
Let's talk about these. :)
Hey D!
ReplyDeleteI could totally feel you in this post of yours! Especially so about disliking grammars and compositions. Also not to forget getting a just pass grade for English. I like how expressive and honest you are in your writing.
We'll get through this together and hope for the best that we are able to unlearn, learn and relearn the English language and get even better through this course! By the way, good work though!
